I bet the conservative dummies on Yahoo actually think their taxes will go down if there was a flat tax.

Progressive taxes are the way to go, the rich get way more corporate welfare than what others can't get (like George Steinbrenner with the city building a place for his baseball business), the rich get the benefits of an oppressive government, like the government protecting the baseball monopoly with government protecting copyrights, giving away airwaves to broadcast games, building infrastructure to access the ballparks, the courts protecting the reserve clause,
Of course, baseball is an obvious open example of corporate welfare. It's high time the pay their FAIR tax, which should be doubled!

Hey, did I say that I was opposed to any of the corporate welfare and laws protecting baseball so the rich can get richer?
NO!
All I am saying the rich need to pay their fair share of taxes is all! I am saying the rich are not taxed enough, the progressive taxation system needs to be somewhere between what it is now and what it was before 1980.

To me, the FAIREST tax of all would be one that impacts that for which we *spend* our money. If we don't RECEIVE goods and services, then we'd simply retain whatever money we don't spend on them. HAVING money is nice, but the only way we get anything good from it is via two venues -- spending it, or giving it to charities. When we SPEND it, then the government gets a percentage of that. And when we give it away, the government owes us nothing in return.

IOW -- a National SALES TAX.

The very simplest and most equitable method of taxation.

With that, we could simply eliminate the IRS virtually overnight -- at the moment of the changeover.

Full wit conservatives argue for it too.

I've never seen a good argument as to why someone should pay a higher percentage of their next dollar than they did of their last dollar.

Besides, conservatives understand something you clearly don't: Progressive taxation doesn't hurt the wealthy. It hurts those who want to become wealthy. Why? Because we don't tax wealth; we tax income. Those who already have wealth can easily sit back and not get income, and then your progressive tax system collapses. But the up-and-coming person who's trying to make wealth gets hurt by a progressive system, since their income is increasingly taxed at the higher rate.

It also hurts the middle class, because the big jump in tax rates occurs just as people are trying to move out of the lower class into the middle class. The current marginal rates jump from 15% of income to 25% of income once you hit about $31K in taxable income for a single filer or married filing separately, $41K for head of household, and $61K for a married couple filing jointly. In many areas, that's where the middle class is.

Progressive taxation, along with all of the credits and deductions that are in place, not only make the tax code way more complicated than it needs to be, but also is Congress's way of doing social engineering, which is not the purpose of the tax code. The purpose of taxation is to adequately fund the essential functions of government, and right now about 80% of what we fund are NOT essential functiond of the government, or not what our Founders viewed as essential functions.

Doubling the tax rate on the rich will do two things: a) kill the economy; b) make Switzerland and the Cayman Islands extremely rich.

You do not believe in copyrights?
You do not believe that a person who has an original thought or idea should own it. What is wrong with you?

And for the Tax cuts.. The majority of them helped the small businesses that most people work for.

In-case you did not take a business class or economic class, most small businesses (under 500 employees) which makes up over 87% of the private sectore file their taxes under "S class", so the majority of the corporate taxes goes to people like your local dry cleaner, grocery store..etc, that is simply trying to make a living.

And corportations (those that trade on wall street) actually do pay taxes twice...

My advice to you, is to get an education. Then post your opinion.

I used to be for a flat tax, till I really looked into it.

The rich would love it.

The poor and middle class would hate it.

The rich benefit from this country and its laws that favor them, so therefore they should pay a heftier tax then the middle class. After all, if it wasn't for the country, then they would have a harder time getting rich. So they should pay for the privilege of this country helping them to get rich.

The middle class is getting screwed up one side down the other.

The country really needs a tax revolt, and no more tax simplification bills passed through congress that end up making the tax code even longer and harder to understand.

Peace

Jim
