"Defiant" is correct.

It can be used as a noun as in "Death to the Defiant!" ... meaning any single person who defies.

Also correct is the plural nominative, "Death to the defiant." ..meaning any group that is defiant.

A simple convention to remember is that if it is used in reference to a single specific individual, you can capitalize the word as if it were a name; "Defiant" instead of "defiant."

For your sentence, either could be correct, but most English teachers will defend the lower-case version.

Context is the key. If you mean to say that many people were killed in response to an individual's act, then lower-case "defiant" is definitely better.

Not to be critical, but one answer provided appears to be close to the real thing, but it needs one important adjustment. A defiant person would be considered an antagonist, while the protagonist would be a person of exemplary qualities. In other words, they are antonyms or opposites. A simple expanation of the way the two words are structured would be to look at the first syllables. "Ant," as in antagonist, or in words with "anti," generally means "against," while pro often means "in support of." This isn't always the case, as in problematic. Or does that mean "in support of blemishes," which are not generally supportive and helpful entities?

Just how far should I go with this one? I think I will stop now.
