Microbes includes all those organisms that require microscopes to see: bacteria, prokaryotes, viruses (debatable if they're living or not), some eukaryotes and all archaea.

The archaea, particularly, live in extreme environments. Some live in extremely hot environments, like hydrothermal vents in the ocean that can be up to 400 degrees F and are under extreme pressures, and are called hyperthermophiles. (There are even larger organisms down there, like tube worms and some mussels!) Others can live in extremely acidic environments (acidophiles), like geysers at Yellowstone national park. There are even bacteria in the ocean's soil, where there's no oxygen and no light, meaning they can't undergo normal photosynthesis and cellular respiration; rather, they produce food by inorganic elements along (chemolithoautotrophs).

Bacteria are found basically anywhere there's a surface: plaques on teeth; in underwater ocean pipelines; in the intestines; on doorknobs, etc. Scientists have been able to classify more bacteria than archaea because bacteria thrive in environments that are closer to laboratory conditions. Archaea, on the other hand, are not as easily cultured. You also find bacteria in the soil. Some live on root nodules and help fix nitrogen in a biologically useful form for the plants.

Many of the microbes found in the deep sea have not yet been identified to the species level.

In some places around underwater volcanoes, there can be so many microbes in the water that submarine pilots can experience white-out—a complete loss of visibility.

They have been discovered in all types of environments on Earth. Deep in the frigid waters of the ocean, near thermal vents in boiling water, in soil, in air, even at the poles.
