Hi

This is not a tough question or a tough process. There are over 4000 colleges in the USA and nearly all of them have International students enrolled.... a total of at least a half-million per year. So, there is nothing unusual about this in any direction.

First decide what part of the USA you want to visit. I suggest the East coast because although it is further from your home, it is also more different from Australia, and what you want is to experience the difference. Also, there are more different flavors of Americans in a smaller space in the east coast, so you can get a better feel for how the whole USA works than if you are in California. Most of the famous colleges in the USA are in the East (like all of the Ivy League plus Duke, Emory, Chicago, MIT, etc)

You want to pick a well respected school so I think you should check the US News college rankings. There is a lot of argument about this list, but pretty much everyone agrees that the top 125 schools on the list are all highly respected and will give you a great education.

Use the college search program at the princetonreview.com or collegeboard.com websites to pick out a school that matches your interest.

Once you have a few schools listed that you are interested in, email their admissions offices and ask about the process to get admitted there. They do this all the time so you are probably going to get back an email from someone who knows exactly how to arrange things.

This is totally do-able. Have a great time!!!!

I'm not sure what the "studying abroad" requirements are but for those of us who live here apparently the answer is money, since they sure aren't really screening for brains anymore.

Well, first you'd have to get a lobotomy, then hit your head off the wall a few times. After that you'll be entitled to admission.
