It is a simple process to install. I have installed many for friends and family and I have alot of time saving suggestions. First make sure you get the right capacity softener for you application. A water sample to a store that sells them will give you your PPM count. I personally like the one unit models vs the 2 tank ones. They take up less space.
Rule number one..don't put it in a tight corner to (get it out of the way) Salt bags in bulk are heavy and you will have a tough time filling it up in a tight spot. Rule number two..use PEX pipe. You will only need to sweat 2 joints (2 copper male adapters between your main) Pex pipe is plastic and very easy to use and is durable for retro fitting. Using a torch around your unit burning plastic and 2X4's and gas lines is for the birds. As far as bypass valves is concerned every softner comes with one. Don't worry about bypassing outside plumbing points ie external taps. If you are watering your lawn or filling the pool just bypass it manually on the unit. Braided rubber hose works great for a drain hose, it bends easy and will contour quite nicely. You will notice after you install, the water will appear more slippery when you shower, this is normal because the pH has been increased making it more basic.hard to get used to at first. But as mentioned earlier clothes will become cleaner with beter lathering properties. Enjoy and don't be intimdated with installation...an afternooon is all it takes..

If you are asking about what brand to buy that depends on the budget. The BEST is one with an autotrol head. It lasts the longest. Watco softeners have this kind of head. It will last 10-15 years without needing service. $900.00-1250.00 installed.( is what I charge)

If that is too much, Go to Sams Club and buy the GE demand softner they sell. Cost is 400.00 plus about 300 to have a pumber install. It is very good and will last 7-10 years without needing service.

For most homes up to three bath, a 1 cubic foot softner is all that is needed. 1.5 cu ft will give more contact time but not needed unless you have more than 3 baths in your home.

Whether it is a single tank or a dual tank system, they all do the same thing. The biggest thing is how long the head lasts.

I have my whole house hooked up to the softner. I use Potassium Chloride instead of salt. It is more expensive but is better for you and safe for the enviroment. The residue is Potassium vs Salt. It is safe for all plants too. with a good softner and a taste and order fliter at the kitchen sink, I have bottled quailty water.

Try and remember to have the installer by pass your outside bib faucets, your toilet, things like this, otherwise your paying for things that are not necessary. Only have the pipes going to the water you want softened.

If you do, you will find a new world out there in having one. No more burning of elements in electric water tanks, no more calcium built up in kettles. And you will be using less soap in washing laundry and dishes. And the list goes on.
Happy sudsing.
