flies fly in zig zags because it makes it harder for the enemy to catch them. many insects have different mechanisms to protect them, for the fly, the swift zig zag take-off is their way out.

Flies fly zig zags for a reason their hearing is excellent so just like humans who move their heads to the rythem of the music so do the flys . Turn off your music and you will notice how streight they fly.

well...my answer wont sound any thing like the rest of these.. when flys do that, they are in an air space with very little movement, and they are obviously 'occupying' a particular dimension of space, and, they are acutely aware of it's parameters, and, they do not seem too willing to part with the space if / when another fly approaches them...so...i think it is an aerial 'dance'...a way of advertising to the other sex,..or, even a way to 'tune' into a wave length of sounds ...[i say THAT because of the monotonous-ness of there buzzing frequency..]
They do this annoying 'thing' at different elevations, too,.. not so noticed when doing it a few inches off the floor, but very noticeable when done at head level to us. When they do it close to the floor, they aren't as noisy, the volume is less volumus, if you know what i saying.
It seems like when they do that near the floor, it rains ...and when they do it 'higher' up, it gets warmer...
It also seems to me that they seek interior's of buildings a day or two prior to storms, or cold fronts, and begin there little 'dance' once they have determined they have found satisfactory quarters they can survive in..
But...what do I know... i just watch them...

No bird can fly in a straight line. Birds are lighter and hence they float. while doing this they are carried away and astray by wind velocity. Coming to FLY, these are very very light objects which get FLOWN by wind velocity, and to reach any destination they fly in Zig Zag way to avoid impact of wind .

Flies are just stupid anyway. When they fly into your home, you leave doors and windows open so they'll fly back out, but no, they just like to fly into mirrors or around your head or around the lights if they are on!
The world will be much better off without them, and wasps too, don't get me started on them!!

one explanation is that they get a better 3-dimensional impression about the airspace they fly in

the other is, that they better manage to get on ppls nerves doing so

thats an intersting question.

1) well, i think its because they cant see very well.
2) because it makes it hard for "us" people to kill them.
3) and like birds they dont have a strong wing?

They fly one way but too much to the left, so they have to correct themselves, but go too much to the right.

They keep on overcorrecting their flight plan.
