i have a 2001 bmw 525i. i need to replace the emblem on the hood but i cant see the backing of the emblem. there seems to be a metal plate welded to the underside of the hood that blocks access to the backing of the emblem. this plate is an original part to the car. not sure why it was built that way seeing as the emblems need to be replaced every few years. what can i do?

It used to be that the hood emblem and trunk lid emblems were held in place by thick plastic inserts (or dubels). Try very carefully with a not so sharp screw driver if you can pry the emblem out a little bit. Be very carefull that you use tape or something soft against which you can pry the emblems outward but parallel to the backing. Take lots of time until you see how they were originally installed. The front and rear emblems are not identical.
