The honest truth is a person can be very religious without being spiritual. Spirituality, in short, is what is in your heart-in your soul. Religion is what someone else has said is spiritual and usually made up a bunch of rules implying that you are a spiritual person by following those rules. What is most important isn't what other people have to say about it, but in fact what you think and feel. Go with your gut feelings, not what someone else tells you to think.

Dav has it right.
Spiritualism aka the Spiritualist Movement occurred about 1880 to 1930, first in the Europe and by 1900 to the US. Due to England Victorian age, it became fashionable to entertain mystics from India. This brought about the "Talking to spirits and later in the US, two sisters INVENTED seances, which Harry Houdini took great fun in debunking.
Yes.. this witch is telling you that seances and Ouija boards are fake, and sometimes dangerous! DO NOT DO THEM!
During this time several books were written, adding fuel to the fire. "The Necronomicon" & "Dyanetics". This is also the time period which gave birth to religions like "Christian Science".
I should also add that during this time was the birth of the Golden Dawn and the Silver Star organizations. (perhaps 1850's?)

Spiritualism is a Science, Philosophy and Religion of continuous life, based upon the demonstrated fact of communication by means of mediumship with those who live in the Spirit World.

Spiritualism is a Science because it investigaes, analyzes and classifies facts and manifestatons demonstrated from the Spirit side of life.

Spiritualism is a Philosophy because it studies the Laws of Nature both on the seen and unseen sides of life and bases its conclusions upon present observed facts. It accepts statements of observed facts of the past ages and conclusions drawn therefrom, when sustained by reason and by results of observed facst of the present day.

Spiritualism is a Religion because it strives to understand and to compy with thePhysical, Mental, and Spiritual Laws of Nature which are the laws of God.

It commenced on March 31, l848 in Hydesville NY with its first public meeting and demonstration in Corinthian Hall in Rochester N.Y. by the Fox Sisters. It was registered as a bonafide Religion in Washington, D.C. in Nov. of l893.

Much that has been written on this site is without the knowledge of the facts of Modern Spiritualism.

It is similar to religion, but it exists without dogma. It is focused on understanding higher things, through a variety of methods. People may claim otherwise, but most religions in fact cannot be spiritual. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam for example, have static ideas in place which disable spiritual growth.

This being said, witchcraft itself may be spiritual, but certain religions that practice it are not.

Actually spiritualism is a term mistakenly used by people to describe their 'spiritual feelings'. The meaning of spiritualism is actually believing in the living communicating with the dead...and that is something I believe in...

Spiritualism was popular around the beginning of the 20th century and usually involved people having seances to communicate with the dead. Since then people have sometimes applied the term to a broader spectrum of behavior involving communicating with "spirits".

spiritualism is the belief that the spirts of the dead remain in some form after death and that they can be communicated with, through mediums, channeling etc.
the difference between religion is that there's no element of worship in spiritualism.

added:

notice, it is often confused with spirituality and spiritism, amongst others.

Spiritualism is the term that people like me use when we want to say that we are aware of the supernatural/spiritual/"religious" things in life even though we don't want to commit to a religion because religions involve actual faith in a deity. People who are spiritual realize there may be more than one god or deity and they don't want to be loyal to just one faith.

Spiritual to share a common spiritual theme: the "path", "work", practice, or tradition of perceiving and internalizing one's "true" nature and relationship to the rest of existence (God, creation (the universe), or life), and of becoming free of the lesser egoic self (or ego) in favour of being more fully one's "true" "Self".

* Meaning – significance of life; making sense of situations; deriving purpose.

* Values – beliefs, standards and ethics that one cherishes.

* Transcendence – experience, awareness, and appreciation of a "transcendent dimension" to life beyond self.

* Connecting – increased awareness of a connection with self, others, God/Spirit/Divinity, and nature/Nature.

* Becoming – an unfolding of life that calls for reflection and experience; including a sense of who one "is" and how one knows.

"Being spiritual" may aim toward:
* simultaneously improving one's wisdom and willpower
* achieving a closer connection to Deity/the universe
* removing illusions or "false ideas" at the sensory, feeling and thinking aspects of a person.
Spirituality can comprise both inner growth, changing oneself as one changes one's relationship with the external universe, and the outer process of transforming the physical reality around oneself as a result of the inward change

Religion
A religion is a set of beliefs and practices generally held by a community, involving adherence to codified beliefs and rituals and study of ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and mystic experience. The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction. Religion is often described as a communal system for the coherence of belief focusing on a system of thought, unseen being, person, or object, that is considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine, or of the highest truth. Moral codes, practices, values, institutions, tradition, rituals, and scriptures are often traditionally associated with the core belief, and these may have some overlap with concepts in secular philosophy. Religion is also often described as a "way of life". "Religion" is sometimes used interchangeably with "faith" or "belief system," but is more socially defined than that of personal convictions.
