To London for a day? Spending half of it on the train?
Would you go to New York for a week and take a train to Washington DC for a day?

I would not. You will see little of the countryside from this train, as it has earthen walls to contain the sound on both sides most of the way. The tunnel is like any other tunnel you have ever been in, just longer.

If you go to London make sure you have at least a few days, a week is the least I would go to a new (for me) big town.

Added,
If you want to leave Paris for a day, take a day-trip in a bus, or take a train to one of the smaller French towns.
I have been in Rouen last year:
it takes about an hour and twenty minutes on the train and gives you a look in an old, not too big town.
But almost every town about an hour travel from Paris might be worth going.
Take a look in your guidebook.
I like the Lonely Planet series, even the Paris book has day-trips worth taking, the France book tells you all you need to know about the country.

It's worth going there if it's probably the only time in your life you will have the chance to visit London. You could see (but not experience and really enjoy!) the Tower, Tower Bridge, Piccadilly Circus, St. Paul's Cathedral, Trafalgar Square, Westminster (Parliament & Big Ben (tower), Abbey), and Buckingham Palace. Keep in mind: London was recently rated being the most expensive city in the world. You will also have to spend some money at least for public transportation.

I would not recommend doing that trip on your own because you might rather get disappointed by having to skip so many highlights and not really have time for anything. In your place I'd check out for organised / guided day-trips from Paris so you won't waste your scarce time not getting lost.

The New York City - Washington comparison isn't bad, but I'd say it the other way round: Is a day trip from Washington to NYC really worth your time and money?

To see London you need at least 3 days, and you would still miss a few sights...

Good Luck...
