Rent can be anything from 300 Euro a month (dream about it, almost always taken people who have been on a waiting list for more than 10 years) up to more than 1200 Euro a month.
Selling prices are accordingly, the cheaper apartments are only for the locals who have to proof that they have been living in town many years or are children of families that live locally.
I have heard about apartments being sold for 300.000 Euro, to more than 3.000.000 Euro.
When you rent or buy an apartment check carefully on the part of town. There are no hotels in the worst parts of town, but there are many cheaper apartments for rent or sale, especially the unofficial rents from the person 'living' there who are not allowed to rent it to someone else (but still do.)

This would depend on several factors.
- location to the center of amsterdam. The deeper in the center, the more expensive.
A colleague of mine had an appartment 5 minutes from the city center, one room/bedroom combined, for 900 EURO a month, including utilities.
I know of apartments about 20 minutes out of the center by tram for around 650 EURO.
- Size of the room. Is it a broomcloset, or can you actually put in more than one chair?
- State of the building.
You apparently also need proof of employment if you go through a legal working agency. There are those that are not legal, but i would advise against those, as you have no protection whatsoever.
