An editorial column is the article/comment the editor of the newspaper writes about what he feels about any thing.

Do you mean the editorial or the op ed columns?

An editorial is an opinion the newspaper's editorial board comes up with. It may or may not reflect the publisher's viewpoint, some publishers don't try and influence editorial policy.

An opionion editorial column or op ed piece is a special column done by a syndicated writer or a freelancer commissioned by the paper as in say Jimmy Carter or Colin Powell commenting on something in the news that the paper thinks may be of interest to its readers. Or it can just be columns from regular people whom the paper decided had something important to say to the readers.

An editorial columns is where the management of a newspaper explains their positions on issues relevant to the paper and the readers. It is an opinion column, as opposed to other articles that explain facts and events.

Such column has other functions besides. It is said newspapers should only the report the news, not to add opinion or judgment. On the other side, to transmit opinion or judgment is almost impossible to avoid, such as by choice of words, by choice of what to news to cover, or not to. To have an opinion expressed openly allows readers to gauge any bias the paper may have.

I have written more then several of these for my hometown news paper. The paper either hires someone to comment of general news stories or asks the public to write stories and the chooses which to print. They usually have something to do with local events and news about the area.
