Usually back when i had Norton like 5 years ago, usually what i do is go in safe mode by pressing f8 when you boot the computer, and uninstall from there. Usually when i try to get rid of Norton, my OS goes with it.

There are several remarks for you about what to use. What you mention should handle most needs. To uninstall right ckick the Icon and disable the program. Go to Add/Remove in the Control Panel and take out anything that has Symantec or Norton. When finished reboot. After installing Avast or AVG Free, go to My Computer and search the C drive for Norton and Symantec. Delete the files/folders of those names and free up a lot of disk space. Might want to do a disk Cleanuo and defrag afterwards.

yeah, perosnally I'm not a norton fan. I'd uninstall it. Avast or AVG are pretty good. I also run Microsoft Defender to help sidestep the spyware problem (but still run spybot too).

Norton is bloated, slow and overpriced and an absolute b*!%ch to remove. Get rid! If you go to the Symantec web site and do a bit of searching, you will find an uninstall routine that will clear it off.
Not sure what you have got from avast - is it an Anti-Virus? I use AVG Free and have found it excellent!

Ok, heres the deal with Norton:
Norton takes up lost of ram while running and unless you constantly download or share files, you probably do not need a program that is running constantly such as Norton. If you feel that you do need Norton, uninstall it and buy the Norton Internet Security Package. This will not take up as much ram and is much cheaper.
An alternative for Norton is AdAware SE Personal. This is great for people who use their computers to do basic tasks. It does not run unless launched and therefore does not constantly take up ram.
In conclusion, if you feel that you need high protection, get a light version of Norton such as Norton Internet Security, but if you only need light virus protection, use AdAware.

Adaware SE Personal Download:

Hope this helps,

Use the Norton Removal Tool to get rid of NAV http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Then if you want to go with a free solution for security, download and run AVG Antivirus free http://free.grisoft.com/ Ad-Aware as for antispyware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php . I am not sure that Zone Alarm still has a free version (they used to), but with Windows Firewall turned on, it should be fine. Note that all these free solutions offer just basic protection. If you are considering paying again for internet security, go with Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0.

get Zone Alarm for your firewall, AVG for your anti-virus, and Spybot is good for spyware... in order to uninstall the majority of it ( i say that because you will never truly get rid of it all ) you have to disable it first, then use Win XP's add and remove software and it's gone
Norton is a resource hog and with it gone you will notice your machine running a little bit faster
P.S. here is a good website for a lot of good useful freeware just go to the download section www.komando.com
