some common surnames which i feel matches the name claire:

-Petit: From the Old French for "small," the Petit surname was often bestowed upon an individual of small stature.

-Simon: Derived from the Hebrew first name Simon, the Greek form of the Hebrew name Shim'on which meant "hearkening" or "listening."

-Roberts: Bright fame or famous in counsel, from the Germanic elements "hrode," meaning counsel or fame, and "beraht," meaning bright.

-Michel: Surname Origin: English, French, Scandinavian

-Bernard: 1) Strong or brave as a bear. From a first name of Germanic origin, Bernard was originally Bernharding from 'beran' meaning bear and 'hardu' meaning brave, hardy, or strong.

-Davis: From the Hebrew name David, meaning "beloved."

-Bonnet: occupational surname from the Old French "bonet," used to describe a maker of bonnets.

-Lambert: Bright land or light of the land, the Lambert surname derives from the Germanic elements "land" meaning land and "beraht" meaning bright.

-Blanc: From the French "blanc" meaning white, the Blanc surname was used to refer to an individual with light (white) hair or complextion. Similar surnames in other countries include White (English), Bianco (Italian), Weiss (German), and DeWitt (Dutch).

just google it, you'll find lists and lists of names!!

this is my surname and it's got a strange little story...

"du Toit" (pronounced du Twa)

Francois du Toit was one of the French Hugenots who fled to South Africa during the procecution of the protestants in France. Because of this there are few Du Toit's left in France, but quite a lot of them in Sout Africa and other countries where the protestants fled. :-)

Google "French surnames" and you will find tons of lists. I have used the French surnames lists myself - and Japanese surnames, Italian, Romanian etc.

For American surnames, I love the US Census Bureau list of most common names - starting with Smith and working its way down. Great to use. I have it bookmarked. Pax - C

My last name is French, but you can't have it LOL ... It's already being used ... by me.
