I feel like I've just wasted half my life, or several hours of it anyway, searching Ebay, Froogle, Craigslist, Target, Walmart, Best Buy and Circuit City trying to find the best deal on a laptop!
I know I need at least 80gb hard drive. And I know I need it to be able to do wireless as I will be using a router for home networking.
And that's about all I know. I've never had a laptop, only home desktops.
My confusion is seeing prices for some laptops with only 20 gb being more expensive than some that have 80gb and I can't figure out why the difference in prices? Why sometimes it seems like laptops with better features are cheaper than others? I feel like I'm missing something here.
I'm hoping someone might explain the process on how to pick a laptop, maybe point me to a good one I could buy online safely, and last tell me if I'm out of my mind to think I can get one for 400$ or less. The cheapest I've found so far is 448$ at the Walmart website.

Like jmnemonic stated, CPU/processor, RAM, video card, hard drive (HDD) space and extras are what to look out for. The basic idea of buying a good computer is more is better. The processor helps with the overall work load so the more space, the faster it can run. RAM helps allocate the work load from the processor so that programs and applications can run faster. The hard drive stores all the information for a later time. The video card helps run movies, games, and other multimedia. Good extras in a computer is built-in ethernet cards (Wi-fi especially), CD/DVD burner, and maybe extended support from the manufacturor/distributor.

Prices get really high because they usually contain the most powerful items inside. An 80 gb computer MAY be better in the aspects of what's inside it compared to a 120 gb, but trade off storage space.

Note: Dell, Sony, and Apple are good computers to look into.

Get a laptop with:
+At least 80gb (preferably 7200 rpm, but 5400rpm ok)
+Vista Home Premium
+Core 2 Duo processor
+At least 1gb Ram (2 gb much better, but you can add more later)
+++If you are considering running games, you MUST get an upgraded video card when you buy the laptop as you typically cannot change it later. If you want it to record tv, etc, you must get it to begin with.
+A CD burner with DVD player (if it comes with DVD burner capability, this is really nice)
+Wireless capable built-in (adding this later is a pain)

You might find that a brand name laptop (Dell, HP, Sony, etc) will run you a little more than $450, but it will be worth it in the long run.
