While New York City may be the economic capital of the nation, history led the political capital of this nation to be Washington DC. As a part of an effort to settle debt and create a balance during a time of war, this area was chosen as a central location for the northern and southern halves of the United States to serve as the capital city. Remember, Washington has been the capital for a long time, and it needed to be accessible by all states in the union. New York City did not meet that, as it was generally too far away from our Southern states.

Since you post this question in section Greece, I suppose you are referring to the Greek district of Macedonia, whose capital is Thessaloniki, a big and beautiful city with a lot of history and monuments.

Skopje is the capital of the republic of
(Slavic/Albanian)Macedonia which is in the Balkans and not in Greece! And it is a medium size city.
The capital of authentic Macedonia of Greece is Thessaloniki.
Thessaloniki was founded circa 315 BC by the ancient (Greek)Macedonians and especially by by Cassander, the King of Macedon (Μακεδών), on or near the site of the ancient town of Therma and twenty six other local villages. He named it after his wife Thessaloniki, the sister of Alexander the Great.
The Thessaloniki prefecture has a population of 1,125,422.
(by the way the specific user who asked this question has asked only question attacking Greece! We know he is a troll!)

I assume you MEAN Skopje, the the capital and largest city in the Republic of Macedonia, and not some other city in some other country.

In the 2002 election, the population of Skopje was 506,926 people.
