I was wondering if anyone has actually witnessed their platy or swordtail have a fry. I have a pregnant swordtail and I'm so anxious to see the babies. My platy had a fry about a month ago but of course I missed that (she had them in the middle of the night while I was sleeping.). Anyway, I was just curious because I thought it would be a cool experience.

Thank you all so much for sharing your stories. Well, I stayed up until 3am watching my swordtail hang out at the bottom of the tank acting "funny" and she seemed very swollen. I just knew it was going to happen any second and I could watch. I woke up this morning and she had obviously had her fry but I can only find 3 right now. They were hiding in the gravel and I noticed the mother pecking at the gravel so I moved the breeding grass down to the bottom. They're hiding in there now. Hopefully there are more than I can see (they're so tiny I'm shocked I ever saw the 3 I did.) My 5 yr old son is sooooo excited!! ;-)

oh! and the bubble bath in the aquarium story was so sad, yet funny at the same time. i only say that because i have 3 small children of my own and i could definitely see that happening (though i sure hope not!)

About two weeks ago, I watched two of my female guppies giving birth. I was planning to use them in a small marine tank and was acclimating them to saltwater in a small Eclipse tank, but the moms couldn't wait until they got to their permanent tank before they released the fry, so they are still in the Eclipse.

It was pretty cool to see - this was the first brood for either of these girls, and both seemed to be a bit shocked by all these tiny little fish. Some of the fry have even started showing a little of their color already - they have black bodies and turquoise tails.

Yes I used to raise guppies about 12 years ago, and wittnessed plenty of their births. But as I was anxious I probably put the mama in the fry tank a little too soon, but was always paid off with a more than plentiful birth if a hundread or more. They would come out of the mother folded and most fell through the safe plexiglass filter, I would say out of a 100 at least 70 would survive! Was a neat experience for myself and children! Until my 2 yr old daughter put bubble bath into the tank! I was heart broke! Well 12 years later here I am back in the hobby of tropical fish with no regrets, just alot more wonder and questions, almost wish I hadn't waited so long!! Get a birthing tank and eventually you will catch this splendor!! Good Luck to you and keep asking questions as I do!

I use to raise both Platties & Swordtails. The experience was AWESOME every month to say the least.Feed them Gold fish pellets.Crush them for them when there young into powder. This WILL MAKE THEM GROW BIGGER THAN THOSE AT THE PET SHOP.GUARANTEED, that's what I fed mine. The pet shop owner would freak out at the size of mine, compared to his.

about 1 month ago i watched my guppy give birth. it was wierd, but my female died 2 days later due to stress of birth i guess. she gave birth in a birthin tank but these things happen somtimes. she was never a very healthy fish though so i was not surprised when she died.

I saw my Molly give birth.
I was trying to get her into the net brooder when the babies just started spilling out a few at a time.
I managed to save most of them.
