If your car is tunned up (good plugs, wires, air and fuel filters, pcv valve, etc.) and the idle is rough I would clean the idle air control (IAC) motor. This is on the throttle body and regulates the air flow during idle. They become encrusted in carbon over time and cannot function properly. There will be a couple screws and a re-usable gasket, simply remove and clean well with throttle body cleaner. Super common problem. While your at it, remove the plastic air intake and clean the inside of the throttle body and throttle plates. You can also clean the MAF, you can buy a special spray to hose it down with at most auto parts stores. Now if it were a sensor, your check engine light would be on. The coolant temp sensor for the computer and the gauge are seperate, so don't use that as an indicator. Scan the computer for codes before spending that kind of $$.

Check the "distributer" for a faulty contactor.
