How can I find out the rules of establishing residency in different states? Want to establish residency in Alaska for one, but can't afford to live there a year.

Not just Alaska--that was an example.

For Alaska, you must:
Live there for 18 months continuously.
Register to Vote within 30 days of the date you claim to have begun residency.
Change your Driver's License over within 30 days.
Change all of your Auto Insurance over within 30 days.
Pay for your new car tags within 30 days.
Accept Employment in Alaska within 30 days or enroll in school within that time period. (this can only help you, but isn't absolutely required.)

Alaska has the toughest residency requirement because they get some much oil tax revenue you don't pay taxes you get paid to live there.

Personally you could not bribe me enough to move to state that is dark all winter, and winter is a 10 month event.

Burr.
