Of course....unless mother nature has different plan and decides to send a lightning to your house. So, you can leave your computer on but advisable not to on a rainy/stormy day.

As long as you dont have your computer set to enter hibernation or to powerdown after a set amount of time, it will continue to download to the directory that you set and it will be there when you get back home or wake up unless you have a power outage or ISP outage.

i download stuff and leave the computer all the time and usually nothing happens to it

It will continue downloading it w/o any problems. It will stop if you don't have enough memory in your hd.
