Would like to go to Fes and also coast as well for a few nights. Have "Med. Europe Lonely Planet", but would like personal feedback, particularly on accom. I am on a budget. I'll be travelling with another woman friend.

Try one of the Riads..they are hotels/guest houses built around a courtyard.some are more luxurious than others. I've only just arrived back from Marrakesh and stayed in an excellent Riad...Riad Kaiss. (Check out the website). It's not cheap but you get what you pay for and it's only 5 minutes walk from the square Djemma el Fna where the snake charmers etc are and also the souks.

I have personal experience in ''hotels'' in Marrakech and they can be very nice and they can be literally a 'bed' and that is about it (not even a shower).

I stayed at the Assala and found it to be a decent place. I also hear the Riad Tammou is wonderfully beautiful as well.

Remember the nicer the hotel, the further you are going to be from the medina, and under no circumstances would I recommend staying in any hotel IN the medina itself except for Hotel Assia (yes that's how they spell it) although it is very difficult to get a room there and with all the services they offer it is like staying at a bus depot but the rooms are decent enough.

As for Fes... alas I did not make it there but from what I hear it is a lot easier to find a 'nice' hotel in Fes than in Marrakech and it is VERY easy to find hotels in Agadir (if you are going to Marrakech take a day to go to the beach!) and if you haggle with the proprietors you can get great rates. My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Tisbet which are mini apartments and payed 350DH off-season/night.

They will ask you how long you are staying and tell them you don't know that depends on the price they give you, but at least a week is our plan... this will get you a lower rate right off the bat... then negotiation from there will get you a great rate if there are rooms available.

Tisbet is owned by a German woman with a gentleman who runs it who is from Morocco but speaks English. It is about two blocks from the beach and within easy walking distance.

Since online prices are set, we booked in a hotel for one night and then looked for places and were able to negotiate lower (a LOT lower) prices when we actually got there.

Another thing, the price of the train from coach to first class is worth taking first class (big cloth seat instead of a hard bench) and when you go to the beach take Supra-Tours bus. Don't let the locals hussle you into something you've never heard of... your bus ride can be most uncomfortable.

Good luck and have fun!

EDIT: there are no Holiday Inn's or Hilton's in Marrakech nor in Agadir or in Fes. There USED to be one in Agadir but they sold out and are owned by a private company now. Very nice... on the beach... biggest beds I have ever seen but also very pricy.

I agree with zelo - if you want cheap, stay outside the medina. What's your idea of cheap? Here are a few hotels I can vouch for, all close to the Djemma al Fna: Hotel Islane (across from Koutoubia, about 250dh/night), Hotel Afriquia (really cute, 100dh/night, shared toilets but clean), Hotel Foucault (no idea about price). Jnane Mogador is also a really popular one but I think it's a bit more expensive. In the ville nouvelle (Gueliz) try Hotel Farouk (200dh/night).

If your idea of cheap is more like North American prices, the Ibis Moussafir is clean and has a pool, and costs about $50 US/night. It can also be booked online and is next to the train station (accorhotels.com)

As for Fes, there are lots of cheaper hotels near Bab Boujeloud, but my favorite is Pension Dalila (google it) at Bab Oued Zhoun. It's 200dh/night and really safe and clean, with private bathrooms.

As for the coast, the best thing to do would be to either visit Essaouira from Marrakech (but it'll be a bit chilly), or hit up Rabat on your way to Fez via the train.

Marrakesh is really a city that sums up each of Morocco's spectacular North African elegance, see it with hotelbye . The city's name offered the main for the title of the nation it self, punctuation out this town's value down the ages. Within the bustle of the city core you will find previous and new clashing and mixing, that may produce some tourists very nearly dizzy. Snake charmers and smooth shop touts both contend for your interest amid a loud, vibrant bustle that encapsulates Morocco's lively soul. For all visitors, Marrakesh's labyrinth Medina (Old City) district may be the town's celebrity attraction. The slim alleyways really are a kaleidoscope of colours, scents and sounds. Is bound to function as the sightseeing highlight of your trip; as well as the only wandering is meant to lively maze.

There is Hotel called "PRIMAVERA", I stay there any time i visit Marrakech. It has clean and airconditioned rooms, friendly staff, and safe. The owner is European, I believe from France. Rooms are available starting from 400.00 Dirham, about 45.00 USD. The hotel is close to the all attractions in Marrakech.
Email me If you need the hotel phone number.
Have fun and a safe trip.

You should be able to checkout hotels like Holiday Inn or Hilton on the internet. Try to find a tourist book; Morocco is a fairly well-traveled country. Try to make it to Casablanca and say hello to Rick.
