To what extent is this incident known and appreciated in the US?

It was a black flag event or some such. Israel tried to sink the ship (and failed). The plan was to blame it on Egypt and then for the US to retaliate. A nearby US carrier actually ordered 2 aircraft each with a nuclear payload, to bomb Egypt. Those planes were recalled.

I saw a BBC documentary on it. The finger pointed at a collaboration between the US and Israel. The surviving members of the USS Liberty have been fighting ever since for the US government and the israeli government to admit it's guilt of a war crime.

It would seem that CG-23 sailor has the most info on this incident. I can not add to his facts. What I find strange is why no one has asked the Israeli veterans why they felt it necessary to sink and therefore silence an American Navy ship and crew. What did the USS Liberty detect or hear that Israel felt was worth sinking her over? Maybe the arming of warplanes with Nukes? The only ones who truly know are the Israelis and No One seems to want to ask!!! Why are we putting such an effort into protecting the Israeli government ? I agree they are our best ally in the middle east, but shouldn't they come under the same scrutiny as our own government?

The USS Liberty (AGTR-5) was fired on by aircraft of the Israeli Defense Forces during the Six Day War. She sustained heavy damage and several casualties. The base hospital at Marine Corps Base 29 Palms, CA is named for her Commanding Officer.
Knowledge and appreciation of this incident in the general U.S. population is about equal to that of USS Pueblo (AGER-2). But, since most Americans' historical appreciation goes back about two weeks, that's not a surprise.

Many question about the Israel involvement still persist, and many questions still unanswered. Israel did pay damages, but never adequately explained the incident to our satisfaction.

zionists LOATHE this question. if you look on wikipedia, it gives a general overview of what happened. if you look on google, you'll find many small websites still asking this question.

it was another case of israel staging terrorist attacks. (usually posing as arabs) this is something that has been well documented as a regular occurence since the formation of the state of isreal.

It was a friendly fire incident during the 1967 war. So what is your point and where are you from?
