Only an experienced eye can tell real Gold from artificial stuff. People in countries like India, Pakistan etc can easily identify Gold, as they use it for ornamentation and as an investment.
Usually a Gold Ornament will have the Jewellers seal on it. Search for it on the underside of a ring, in the clasp or behind an elaborate design of a chain or necklace, on the screw of an ear stud, on the underside of a bracelet. Here you'll also find the carat of the Gold mentioned.
Gold does not tarnish.

Carefully rub the article on a piece of unglazed tile (ie, the underside of a white tile). The metal will leve a strip of colour. If it is gold, the colour of the strip will be green, despite the fact that the gold is yellow. This is called a streak test.

If you have a necklace that is actually gold, you will see the 10K,14K on the clasp of the necklace, or if a ring, you would see 10K or 14K stamped inside the ring. You have to look closely. Also, if you are wearing fake gold, the chain, ring, etc will change colors when you sweat! I hope that helped!

The same way Archimedes did, by using his Law. Weight it, and weight it again under water, and calculate it's specific mass. Or use a touchstone or an electronic assaying instrument.
