I am going to a close friend's wedding soon, and have a new, '40s style black dress I would like to wear. I plan on adding some color with a scraf and some other accessories, but I know that old wive's tales say this is innappropriate. The wedding is after 6pm, outdoors and casual, so I believe with the right accessories it will be very appropriate, but I was just wondering wht the general consensus is these days on wearing a black dress to wedding.

Black usually is seen as more of a "mourning, dark, and morbid" color, and white usually symbolizes happiness and cheerfulness. since you are very close to the bride, ask her what her opinion is, and make sure it wont offend her if you wear black. Since its casual, you probably can get away with it. I would def. wear white accessories like necklaces, earrings, bracelets, shoes....etc!

If it suits the theme of the wedding, and how casual or formal the occasion is, it's fine. Double check with the bride, to be sure. The "little black dress" has been a staple in women's wardrobes since the phrase was coined many years ago. Black dresses get worn to many, many occasions, especially if you were born in the Year of the Snake.

the rule of thumb in accordance to etiquette books is that whether that's an after 5 wedding ceremony interior with a take a seat dinner after its ok yet whilst that's an exterior wedding ceremony or in the previous in the day or they are going to have a buffet reception then that's superb to adhere with a non black gown however the only shade it is truly off limits is white that's barely for the bride

No. I'm planning on having black be one of my colors when I get married. It's a very classic color, despite the negative feelings about it (ie: funerals). Times have changed - I don't think that many people wear black to funerals anymore. With or without the accenting color, just go with it and have fun.

Black is appropriate at a night wedding. You're in the clear, hon. You had a good idea by brightening it up with a scarf or jewelry or accessories.

It's not an old wives tale - it's called etiquette!
Get a colored belt to wear, add a scarf, and wear bright shoes to match the belt.

I know it's a no-no, but try to be sure to wear a ton of bright acessories. Maybe even a bright belt around the waist of the dress.

If you add some accessories it should be just fine. Have fun at the wedding!
