G = final grade
W = average of all your coursework
F = final exam

G = (2/3)*W + (1/3)*F

What you're presenting are the weights assigned to the course work (2/3 or 66 2/3%) plus final exam (1/3 or 33 1/3%) as a basis in determining your final grade or total performance (1 or 100%) for the whole semester.

Let us illustrate the application of the above based on a concrete example. Assume that the final passing grade is 50% for the whole semester. Assume further that you got zero in your final exam, how much rating shall you get in course work so that your final grade would be 50%?

Let x = in course work in order to get a final grade of 50%.

2/3x + 1/3(0) = 50%
2/3x + 0 = 50%
2/3x = 50%
x = 50% / (2/3)
x = 50% x 3/2
x = 75%

Proof: 2/3 of 75% = 50% in course work, plus 0% in final exam equals to total of 50% for final grade.

Another example: Assume that you got 40% in course work and 70% in final exam. What would be your final grade?

(2/3 * 40%) + (1/3 * 70%)
(26 2/3%) + (23 1/3%) = 50%

The procedure is multiply the item criteria with its respective assigned weight and add the products together in order to arrive at your final grade.

Of course, the total % required for the passing final grade depends upon the policy of the school's administrators and the educational governing agency of the government.

I hope this helps.

Say your course work score is 84 and your final test grade is 75. Your final grade would be....
2/3 * 84 + 1/3 * 75 or 56+25 =81
