how do you determine what shade you need? I always manage to get some to light or to dark.

Most makeup stores have this makeover. A professional makeup artist will give you a kind of makeover, and then tell you what will match your skin tone, and whether foundation or powder is better for you. Plus, you even learn what eyeshadow and lip color fits you best!

If you are purchasing your foundation through a drugstore, match the shade to the skin on your neck. Some people say wrist, although this may not be entirely accurate either. If you have more than one foundation around, try mixing them together to get your exact skin tone. Otherwise, the person working the makeup counter should be able to help you.

Concealer should be a shade lighter than your foundation. If you have dark circles you can use one with yellow pigmentation. If you have red skin, use one with green pigmentation.

I get one that's too dark and one that's too light and mix them to get a good match. That way in summer if I have a bit of a tan or use fake tan I can just use more dark. Works great for me, I was having the same problem. Hope this helped!

The way I try to do it is get samples so I can see if I have one shade of if I have to mix two different colors to get the right shade.

you're suppose to be able to match the makeup color to your wrist. which ever one comes more close to your wrist, is the one you're suppose to get.
