Youth hostels are good, also check out craigslist. Some people rent out their place for a night or a week or month and are not too expensive. There are some motels that are 50-60 depending if it's on the weekend or during the week. You can also get good deals if you reserve online. I suggest you meet people and make friends while your here so that next time you'll have a place to crash for free, in exchange you let your new friends crash at your place when they want to vacation there.

Your conference is actually in Mission Valley at the Town and Country Hotel and not downtown. It's in hotel circle which is infamous for cheap hotels. If you look for hotels in San Diego just search "hotel circle". There is everything from Motel 6 to Crowne Plaza so you shouldn't have trouble finding one that fits your budget. Try calling the different hotels to see if they are offering special rates for your conference. Otherwise, try Priceline or Hotwire. I work at a hotel and our rooms that go for $109/nt are being sold for $49/nt on the internet. Also ask if the hotel/motel you choose has an airport shuttle. It may be worth the extra few bucks to stay at a hotel with shuttle service since a taxi will cost about $25 to get there from the airport. . As far as cheap food, there isn't much in hotel circle except a couple diner type restaurants but there is the Fashion Valley Mall right next to the convention center that has a pretty good food court.

Finding a "cheap" place in S.D. is very difficult. Maybe you could check into hostles, those are very inexpensive. Otherwise, I suggest you check into Best Western or other comperable hotels that offer mini-suites with little kitchens, and seperate bedrooms. I got one online this past winter for as low as $79 per night and it was just a couple of blocks from the beach off Pointseittea. But look online, that is the best place to shop for some good deals, then contact the hotel, not the 800 # listed, and ask for the best deal, compare.
