I couldn't believe that it made the list of seven world wonders!

How did it beat Timbuktu, Angkor, Alhambra, etc.?

It does not have interesting history or anything.

Did everyone in Latin America just vote for Latin American places on the list?

It's the people who voted, not a panel of experts or judges. I dont think it was a "latin for latins" vote, I am latin and I voted for Angkor. I dont think this particular vote has anything to do with religion. It is a great work of art and it just happened that more people voted for it. And it all depends on each countries campaign. President Lula did a great campaign all over Brasil (millions of people live there) and it got voted. It was a surprise, a great one for al brazilians. I have been twoce to Rio and I particularly love the statue.

Yes, we did vote for the Christ Redeemer, we brazilians are very proud and patriotic, unlike the others. If they wanted Timbuktu,Angkor or Alhambra to win, then why didn't they voted or campaign asking their native people to vote? And for your information the statue represents Christianity and that Jesus is watching over the city of Rio. Go to wikipedia and read about it a little bit before saying that it does not have any interesting history.

Look here Gum Drop Boy or whatever...
Yes I did make the list and it was choosen, do you have any problem with that? Do you know anything about the Christ Redeemer or Brazil? Have you been there? I bet you don't even know where it is! I'm sooo glad that the Statue of Liberty did not make it, what is interesting about it? It was a favor that the French made for you guys, it wasn't even made by an American, you needed the French to make that for you! HAHA! By the way...let me tell you the only thing from your country, if you are an American, the $$$ and the freeways in Arizona. Oh, you want know something, get up from the front of the computer and take a road trip around the US and if you see something nice besides slums then tell me,ok? And I'm gonna tell the Christ Redeemer to bless you cuz you need it! Brazilians are the BEST!!!!

It happened because of all the foreign Tourists whom like me have been to Brazils wonder and stood at the feet of "Christ The Redeemer" or gone into the chapel under the statue and prayed for a safe flight back home okay! and yes the statue is beautiful and really is a beacon on top of Corcovado overlooking the bay of Rio De Janeiro, go there yourself and you will see why it won. You cannot appreciate it unless you have been there. I am not that surprised people voted, look at the way the world is going.

Besides the fact that it's a religious image surrounded by an astonishing sight of Rio de Janeiro, in my opinion it happened because Brazil's population is over 180 million people and media worked a lot to make people vote on Christ.

I agree with David. There are a lot of people who think that just because it's a statue of Christ.

I want to go to Brazil and have no interest in seeing it.

I think the moai on Easter Island is more of a wonder. And the places you listed are definitely greater than that statue.

It's weird that all the things that were chosen are man-made.

This "vote" was a farce. Why do we need to select seven "new wonders" anyway? Let's just appreciate them all.
Duplicate voting and regional bias obviously gave the Latin American sites a boost. Religion probably had an effect, too, on the Christ the Redeemer statue's votes.
I don't see how any intelligent person could have not voted for the astounding Angkor Wat, but then, as I said, the vote was a farce anyway.

you could talk about the huge christian influence in brazil... you could also talk about how there are much larger statues of christ throughout the world, and why this one is capitalized on so much.
