FOIL stands for First, Outer, Inner, and Last, I will foil the equation and show you how it works.

1. (8x - 1) (2x + 5)

We now multiply the first part in both sets of parenthesis...

2. 8x * 2x = 16x^2

Now we multiply the outer set of numbers...

3. 8x * 5 = 40x

Now we multiply the inner set of numbers...

4. -1 * 2x = -2x

Now we mulitply the last set of numbers...

5. -1 * 5 = -5

So now we have a series of numbers as shown below.

6. 16x^2 + 40x -2x -5

Now we simply have to group all like terms together and figure out what they add up to, so in this case we would figure out what 40x - 2x is equal to.

7. 16x^2 + (40x - 2x) -5

8. 16x^2 + 38x - 5 becomes your final answer since all like terms have been grouped together.

Foiling an equation should produce a result with the basic formula of: ax^2 +/- bx +/- c where a, b, and c are the numbers you get from the multiplication, positive or negative.
