My home town, is the second largest in the entire state of West Virginia, and it was founded in an unusual way! For an unusual reason. It didn't just grow like most towns do! It was founded by a railroad tycoon who never even lived there! His name was Collis P. Huntington. I can't remember all the details right off hand, but I think it was an interesting story!
Also it is the home of Marshall University, and the subject of the new movie with Mathew McConaughey called "We are Marshall" *sm*

It has one of the best liberal arts colleges in the country.
In the 1800's it was a major hub of river transportation in CT.
Oh and about 12 million restaurants. We have a ridiculous amount of restaurants for the size of the town. There are about 35 downtown alone. You could probably eat out at a different restaurant every day and not eat at the same one twice in a year.

My town is almost constantly in the news for two idiots, living in an apartment building, who shoot themselves overnight due to a dispute with a woman, stolen car or a card game.
