I think it's partially because we go overseas and act stupid (overly patriotic, loud, don't show respect for other cultures and attempt to learn languages, etc) and partially because they are jealous. Supposedly they hate us, but they wear our brand names (Nike), eat our food (Mickey D's), emulate our music (Rock, Hip-Hop, etc...)
I agree...it has been old for along time.

The same reason "Americans" try to make other "Americans" feel guilty about being "fat".
Unfortunately, "Americans" are not "Americans" any more. "Americans" have been relegated to a "class system". "Americans" are "homeless", "the working poor", "lower middle class", "middle class", "upper middle class", "privileged middle class", "upper privileged middle class", people who are at the low end of being rich, those who are at the mid-level of being rich, and those who are just "stupendously" rich!
When my husband and I were working, we were "statistically" considered "middle class". Now that we are old and retired, we are among the statistics of the "lower middle class". If we were still working, we would quality as the "working poor"!
To receive any Social Security health benefits beyond the very basic plan, my husband and I would each be required to pay $80 a month--a total of $160! That's over $1900 a year! We can have several week-end vacations on that amount of money each year, and when you're dead, you're dead!
Donate your body to science, and your family won't even have to pay any funeral or burial costs!
I'm not sure I understand your reference to "geography stuff". What does that have to do with being an American?

They don't make me feel guilty at all. We have been a country 231 years, and we run circles around the "old world". Even with all our flaws we are the best country in the world and those other places are jealous. We have prospered and achieved more in 200 years than they have in 2000.
Don't let them get to you. No, I couldn't point to Romania on a map, nor do I have a need to. I bet they couldn't point to Nebraska or Mississippi on our map.

Because it works! Americans can be made to feel guilty over just about anything. And when Americans feel guilty, we tend to give out money to "solve the problem". Works every time.

not being Americans, Europeans need to feel special about themselves even though their economy isn't growing for xxxx, so they do the natural thing -- bash the successful which is us.
Having traveled in Asia, I noticed that most poeple there aren't bashing Americans -- their economy is growing just fine, thank you, and what they want to do is sell more stuff to Americans. [They'd also like it if America protected them from China for another few decades.]
does this help?

Our foreign enemies cannot defeat us militarily so they must rely on a more subtle means.
They will attack our moral premises until we are unsure of ourselves. Then we will have lost the will to fight and our military superiority will not be able to save us.
This is why we are unable to defeat small bands of insurgents in Iraq. We question our own motives for being there and now hesitate when we need to strike the final blow.

Jealousy. We are disliked for the same reason most baseball fans hate the Yankees - they have the most money, tend to win everything (though certainly not lately!).
