The area of a square is the side squared. If the room is 12 foot by 12 foot, the side is of course 12 feet. The amount of carpeting needed ("area") will be 12 feet squared, or 144 square feet.

144 12X12=144 and if you divide that by 9 you get your
Sq yards which is 16 yards. If your room is exactly 12 wide you should be fine just remember to measure from the wall to the middle of the doorway.

thats 144 sq ft......BUT, you need a little more for the installers to work with.....150-155 sq feet would work. Check with your carpet store for the proper overage you will need

12 X 12, or 144 square feet (that's why the term is square feet, its feet times feet, and anything times itself is "squared").
I hope that if you're laying carpet, you get a grown up to help you.
