God exists as a personfication of the hopes and aspirations of the culture who calls upon him. When the Jews were struggling for their very survival as a people, their God was an aggressive and vengeful God who punished both their enemies who were trying to destroy them from the outside, and the "sinners" who could change and destroy their culture from within. Later, when they were trying to expand their religion and recruit new converts, God was transformed into a welcoming God of Love who accepted outsiders, instead of the defender who had to keep them away.
God exists, but He is created by Man - not the other way around. And God is constantly changing to suit the needs of the culture that needs Him.

You have attributed to GOD a nature. How do you know this?
You presume that he is spiteful if he can change things but does not. I don't agree that you can make this conclusion on such narrow terms.
let me suggest that GOD has said what he will do already, but has not chosen to act on your time table. Is he now lazy because he has a different time table that you?
The question in basic is good, but I believe you are trying to define GOD in terms that may not be logically founded.
I will also point out that most of the bad things happening these days are largely because of Man and not GOD. Why should he do anything other than destroy Man?
and if for merciful reasons, he should chose not to, can you determine all the reasons why?

I believe God does exist, and wants to help, but if he were to force people to not be evil, or stop bad things from happening it only takes away the free will he gave us. The greatest thing on this earth is the abilities to choose, and do as you please. Yes it is very sad when people do things to inflict pain on others, but that is the choice that person made, and if there is life after death (which would be an eternity longer then this short lifespan) they will pay for their actions. Bad things can also be Experience's that help you grow stronger in this life if you use it for personal growth. It is your life, you can choose to be happy, and look at all the great things you have, or choose to look at all the things you do not have and hate yourself for not having enough.
You have the power within you to make yourself happy.

Perhaps the universe or multiverse as some would have it is like a spinning top put into motion. Someone or thing started it but its destiny is undetermined. People need to take responsibility for their own lives and not blame God for their misfortunes. However, say you had an ant farm with thousands of ants in it. Would you notice if one of them was miserable? It's really up to the ants to take care of themselves; isn't it?

I'm not about to say that AIDS and cancer and natural disasters and famine etc. are a good time, but how interesting would life be if there was no opposition? BORING. We have choices in our lives, and we can choose to help those in need thus improving ourselves and the lives of others. I think that's God's way. Short answer: Yep - God exists.

Well it's not exactly like you never heard of Christianity and God's plan to totally eliminate evil sometime in the future. You are basically demanding that God do so now, with no regards to any works in progress. As such your suppositions take on an illogical quality.

You might be thinking of some other God than the one in the Old Testament. Seems to me something in there might have left me with an impression of spiteful.
Must be some other God you're talking about. One of those Roman Gods, maybe. That's all I can figure.

Supposedly it's because of free will.
One thing is for certain, if God exists we can't comprehend his motives in human terms - though a lot of those who profess to follow him pretend to do so as a means of exerting control on other people's lives.

The question you ask has a name. Theodicy. If god is all good and all powerful, why is there suffering? Good luck getting a satisfactory answer.
My question is this: in what way does it matter whether god exists, or not?

It's not God who is at fault in all of this , it is mankind who has distanced himself /herself from God!
If God wanted robots who would automatically follow him , life would be easy but our r'ship to him, would not be the same !
So , we have been given freewill to CHOOSE to follow him , serve him , grow in our knowledge of him !
Yes God is all powerful ...just look at his creation that came into being through his spoken word ! If he wanted he could choose that suffering , disease & all of the other ills of our world would not happen ,. but his plan for mankind is for us to follow him.If mankind chooses to walk a different path , to live sinful selfish lives , to turn a blind eye to the injustices of our world , to worship false Gods , to live as pagans & doubt his authority & supremacy ...why then should he step in to save us from ourselves !
The time will come when he WILL triumph over all of the earth , there WILL be a time of judgment , there WILL be an eternal consequence for each & every one of us ....it is for us to choose where we wish to spend eternity & make the right choice !
