all ball parks have the center field area an off-whitee color mostly black, so that the batter can see the ball come out of the pitchers hand. it is so that the whole section doesn't wear a white shirt then it is hard for the batter to pick up the pitch and rotation on the ball. GO TRIBE!!!!

Years ago yankee center field was know as death valley. After the remodel they moved the monuments to their present location and the black seats act as abatters back drop so the batter can can see the pitch better. In 2009 in the new stadium there will be a restruant in dead center field along with the monuments being replaced their.

that space where the monuments are used to be in play.
center field was 461 feet and the gaps were around 450
when they remodeled the stadium they moved in the fences to more "normal" dimensions.
the old cleveland stadium was very much like that too.
back in the mid 60`s i remember 75,000 + fans at a yankee double-header there- they sold lots of standing-room tickets

You can't have people sitting in those seats. It distracts the batter. When the stadium was built that rule was not in affect so it was built with seats in center feild. A lot of the old ballparks are built like that.

Its called the batters eye, You can't sit anyone in dead center because it will many times throw off the batter, they have it usually dark in order to be able to see the white ball a lot more clear, it is harder to hit the ball when you have a lot of different colors out there because you sometimes lose the ball
