I have some place mats made of plastic canvas and worsted weight yarn. Can they be washed and if so, how do I wash them?

Soak them in a sink with a mild soap like Woolite. Use only cold water so the colors won't run. Lightly sponge off any spots. Blot between 2 towels. When totally dry, spray on a coat of Scotch Guard to prolong the need to wash them again. PS. I forgot to make sure you thoroughly rinse any soap residue out of them with cold water.

I have a book cover made from plastic canvas and yarn that has metallic threads in it. I have washed it twice on gentle cycle, with Woolite. I air-dried it both times. I think it would melt in the dryer.

Yes, they can be washed. Did you make them? If so, check the care instructions on the yarn wrapper. Otherwise, use mild soap and cool/warm water so they don't shrink or bleed, and let them air dry. This is for wool yarn.

i washed mine on a low cycle with Tide detergent, and air dried them. They turned out fine.
