The only thing it hurts is your electric bill. It also is totally unnecessary as long as your pool water is balanced. pool companies recommend running it 12 hours a day which is ridiculous. I run mine 4 to 6 hours a day and have never had any problem with water balance or water health. But bear in mind, this is all dependent on your filtration system.

Certainly NOT. Generally it all depends how how much you use your pool and the number of persons in it and a few more variables such as sun, dust etc. More swimmers in the pool use more chlorine faster. Most pool companies want you to run your pool 10-12 hours a day but that is much to long if you have a good filtering system and keep your water "balanced". You'll get a good "feel" for your inground pool after awhile.

It shouldn't run more than 8 hours. If your problems are where it needs to run more than that, you need to shock, brush, and reshock, 2-4 hours before running the pump. The onlt thing that gets hurt if you run your pump more than 8 hours is your pocketbook. I run my pump 2 times a day for 3 hours.
