If you are interested in genealogy, then speak with the oldest members of your family about what they remember. Write down names and dates.
From there either subscribe to or order software that has census records You would be surprised at what you find there.

you can usually tell by your last name
okay i looked up your last name and it could be one of a few things.
Larson
1. Americanized form of Swedish Larsson, Danish and Norwegian Larsen.
2. English: patronymic from a pet form of Lawrence.

could be Norway, Sweden, Finland.
