A man was found dead in his study. He was slumped over his desk and a gun was in his hand. There was a cassette recorder on his desk. When the police entered the room and pressed the play button on the tape recorder they heard: "I can't go on. I have nothing to live for." Then there was the sound of a gunshot. How did the detective immediately know that the man had been murdered and it wasn't a suicide?

If the man had shot himself, how did he rewind the tape? Would have been hard if he was dead.

First of all, the gun would not remain in the man's hand if his body was forced to slump in any direction; therefore, the gun had to have been planted in his hand. Secondly, if the man committed suicide, when the detective pressed the play button on the tape recorder, it would have clicked-off, as it would be at the end of the tape already. The detective would have to rewind the tape in order to hear the message, unless of course--as in this case--someone already rewound the tape, causing further speculation.

Interesting to see the question Homicidal Suicide? under the topic "Homework". I'll go along with the rewound tape. Nice job.

Since the recording included the gunshot, the tape would have to have been stopped and rewound after he was shot.
