Over the years, society has compiled a basic list of literature that every educated person should know. If you are going to complete any sort of liberal degree, you will read some of these books in college, but by no means all. If you are going to college you should start to become familiar with some of these books because:

(1) Reading college-level literature will prepare you for college! Many books can be enjoyed, but college-level books represent the best and most intellectually rigorous books available. College will be a lot easier if you can read these. You can even use the content you learn from these books in your classes. You're expected to have read a certain amount of college-level books by the time you get to college.

(2) You will not read every book you should read in college. Reading is a life-long endeavor and if you are going to read, you might as well read the best books: books that you might not find fun, but books that will help you grow as a person. This will help you in life. No, your employer doesn't care what novels you've read, but reading does give you a greater understanding of life and allows you to appreciate life in ways you might not have otherwise.

These are often books that it is assumed that educated people have read. Once you are familiar with them, you can put other things you learn in the context of that knowledge; for example, you would know if a book you are assigned in a college English class is a take-off on one of the books on the list, or you could compare and contrast in your analysis. They may also be books which provide you with knowledge of cultures, history, geography, etc., which will come in handy as you go through your college experience.
