I've done this; at slow speed...most of the time you'll hear a terrible ratcheting noise and when you get slow enough, the parking brake pawl will finally engage and sometimes cause the tires to come to a screeching halt, and then you slam your face on the steering wheel (it hurts). I haven't busted a transmission yet.. Depending on the car, usually the extent of damage can be determined by removing the oil pan (some cars don't have one (Honda) and lots of times the broken parts can be replaced without removing the transmission. Most rear wheel drive cars can be repaired without removing the transmission. Front drive is another matter.. Perhaps I can tell you about the time in high school when we told Johnny Loco to take his car up to 90 and then throw it into "R" for racing...

The mechanism in the transmission (gearbox) that locks the cars drive line in place would umm...... don't try it. Big Money repair if it breaks, especially on more complicated transmissions.

However, some big vehicles (trucks) have another device that locks the Drivetrain. It may also be possible to drive with the park function non functioning, using the handbrake to park.

You can break the parking pawl off. This is not a good idea. It is possible to tear up the transmission and you'll have a large repair bill. good luck.

WAHAHAHA, You can have a lotta fun with that! Somethings like, gears breaking and shooting out from the tranny and into the cab of the car, causing deadly injury.
