Hot, and a warm shower works nicely too! It is also good for engorged breast and if you are having difficulty pumping.

Always use a warm compress or shower if you have a blocked duct and want to continue to nurse. Keep your baby attached and nursing as much as possible thereafter. If you're trying to slow production or ease the duct as you're no longer nursing, use a cold compress.
I have suffered enormously from blocked ducts and my doctor finally sheepishly offered the only suggestion that has ever worked for me- it's absolutely not for everyone, (any my doctor was careful to qualify that!) but if you're comfortable, and desperate enough, you might have your husband or partner try to clear it since he'll follow directions better than your baby will. Not many people are willing to offer that advice publicly because it sounds so taboo, but it has allowed me to continue to nurse my daughter- and for that, I consider it worth sounding like a crackpot!
Good luck!

The other suggestions of a warm shower is good, but I soaked in a warm tub of water. It relaxes the ducts, and if you massage the breast while covered in the warm water, it helps get of the engored breast.
For other suggestions, check out the La Leche Leaque. It really helped me when I was a nursing mom.

I had mastitis 2 times already. Go along with what the others recommended but I also recommend getting some wool extra thick breast pads. They are very easy to take care of and they keep your breasts warmer so that they don't clog. You can find some reviews on them at www.diaperpin.com.

Warm.
After 15 minutes, take off heat, and 'massage' the milk down, then pump or feed the baby.
If it doesn't unclog after two feedings, or spot feels hot, or you feel feverish, call doctor to be sure you don't have mastitis.

A nice warm shower gets things going - unclogging as well as triggering a 'let-down'.
