The answers you got ARE correct but neglect to mention that opening task manager uses a lot of processor wait several min for it to stablize

you can check CPU usage in the Task Manager, to get there press and hold Ctrl, Alt, and Del. Then go to Performance

If you are using Windows XP, press control + alt + delete and when task manager appears, it will be in the middle of the status bar. If you click the performance tab, you'll get more details.
