Its YOUR choice--and right--to decide how to refer to yourself.
There is a sick pattern of so-called "advocates" for the disabled thinking up a multitude of terms to refer to us. None of these paternalistic jerks ever bother to find out what WE think.
As the title of one book (by J. Charlton) says: "Nothing About US Without Us"

Well, as long as it is you refering to yourself, you have a right to call yourself anything you want. It is not PC for other people to make there comments, but from my view point, you have the right to call yourself a gimp or whatever you want. I have been disabled for about 10 years and I call myself all sorts of things. If I don't make fun of my situation I'll go crazy. It's really hard being disabled. Sometimes I can hardly walk even with a cane and have to have my husband wheel me around in a wheelchair, aka the wheelbarrow, I make the most of it and I call myself the gimp all the time. If it bothers other people tell them to get a life, one like yours and see how they react and how they feel all the time. Stick to your guns and do what makes you feel good, you have enough bad times, don't let others put you down and make you feel guilty. The hell with them, they don't know you and your pain.

Basically the rule for all types of "different" groups is that it's okay for the community to use derogatory language but not okay for outsiders to, with a few exceptions. I personally would not want to use the word gimp.

Good on you. I personally believe we're all a little too hung up on the PC thing. But still, don't call a someone of another race "bro" unless you have the geneology papers to prove you have at least 25% of that race in your blood. It gets complicated, doesn't it?
I'm not a complete idiot, some of the parts are missing.

I know some people with physical disabilities that kept getting in trouble in school for referring to each others as Cripples.

I find people with disabilities have a ' blacker' sense of humour about their disabilities than the able bodied who are uncomfortable with any kind of disability humour.
Sad isn't it.

"gimp" seems very tame.
there are a lot worse names you could use to refer to a disability.
also, consider that you may be a bit extra-perceptive to people's reactions when you say this because you expect them to react negatively. maybe they just don't think its that funny, but you project their reaction as "wow, she's really politically incorrect".

its not degrading to have a sense of humor about a disability you have. you are just making the best of things, and if you want to use that word, then use it.. theres nothing wrong with it. it shows you have accepted it for what it is, and aren't letting it bother you.
