That depends on what time period you consider to be the rise of American Democracy.

The current alignment of Democrats vs Republicans has been in place for about 150 years. Prior to that (roughly 1828 - 1850), the dominant parties were the Democrats and the Whigs. Going even further back, you have the Federalists and the anti-Federalists, who were the root of what became the Democratic Party. In this early period, the parties were very loose alliances, so loose that they weren't really what we would think of as parties at all. I would date the existence of real parties from 1832, which was the first year the competing parties held formal national conventions to nominate presidential candidates.

Federalist
Democrat-Republican
Whig

Those were the 1st big 3.
First were the Federalists led by Adams who wanted a strong & stable federal government.
Then the Democrat-Republicans who were opposed to the Federalists
Democrat-Republicans shortened their name to Democrat the Federalists party disappeared and the new party to oppose Andy Jackson and his high and mighty democrat idea were the Whigs.

There were none at the RISE of our democracy. The wigs were one of our first parties. Republicans and democrats have been around since the mid 1800's.

Political parties are a waste of our system. We either need to eliminate them altogether or we need two to three more of them to upset the balance of power and the deadlock that has infested our country for more than 50 years. Only then will there be real change...

Think there hasn't been change...Oil, abortion, gun rights, education, foreign policy, and other key issues have been issues since the close of world war two....or shortley thereafter...
