Well, this is one of those things, Any one can sing! The question is can you sing well? You have to practice, because even the sweater voice can be bad if not worked out....
So my suggestions are to:
1) Practice (LOTS)
2) Sing to other people ( when you thing that you are ready, ask for truthful opinions.)
3) Keep singing if you like it, even if you can not sing well, it is good for you to do what you like. It can also reduce stress.
4) Don't base your ability on just a few family members or friends. You have to also "listen to your self" record your self and play it back, so you can "HEAR" what you sound like!
Some people really do think that they sing better then what they do. because they have herd the song so many times they are hearing the singers not them self's!
With Kind Regards,
Adam D.

Listen to the music and feel it! try to feel what the artist is feeling! Listen to it very clearly and try to put yourself in their positon! Dont scream and holla actually sing the song! Practice parts that change tunes! like parts that jump from low pictch to high pitch! or the other way around! If you have a play station 2 they have an american idol game that gives you scores on your singing! They have present songs like songs you can sing along to! they even post the lyrics at the bottom of the screen for extra help!

Lots of practice,
And also, record yourself to see how you really sound,
It will shock you, and you probably won't like what you hear,
But that's what everyone else hears, so it's best to face up to it right away, so you can go about fixing it!
I also recommend reading some books on singing techniques and tips.

Make sure, your body is straight. Start the sound from your belly and work it up. Breath. Practice controlled breathing. Read books and get a grasp for feelings that can be portrayed in singing. Things like glory, sorrow, etc.

You can sign up for singing lessons. That helped me alot or drink lots of lemon water and tea. And listen to the singer's pitch in a song and practice.

Vocal technique lessons can help a little bit, as well as learning to read music and learning about music theory. This helps you understand things like tone, proper breathing, and dynamics that can make any performance better.
but overall... it's a gift that you either have or don't, and if you don't have the potential, then lessons can only make you slightly if not at all better.

Get a vocal coach or try walking on a treadmill while you practice... this will help you with keeping your pitch if you are a performer and move around a lot when you sing

I know this sounds stupid, but record yourself with a simple tape recorder, and see what you can improve on. It helped me a lot. Also, warm up before you sing. Sing scales, do high sighs to "loosen up" your voice, and stretch your mouth before you begin.
Good luck with all your future singing!
