Smaller front bigger back is for acceleration
bigger front and smaller rear for top end speed
Changing 1 tooth on the front is about equal to changing 4 on the back!

A smaller sprocket by the engine will make it faster when it winds out , and a bigger one will make you go faster acceleration.

Smaller front and/or larger rear - quicker acceleration and slower top speed.
Larger front and/or smaller rear - slower acceleration and faster top speed.
