Found my wife of 8 years on the other end of an online chat, so I would say yes.
BUT.
There are plenty of other situations where you just don't know. Including even Yahoo Answers, some of the questions appear to be very loaded, like the classic:
Where can I download xxxxxxx for free?

I'm not sure, mostly not. I have met many many people from on line chats and they always look different to how I expected them to. Not ugly, but just different. I still think its a great way to meet people I wouldn't otherwise have the privilege of knowing.

To me,its more important that they are being honest and who they really are then being attractive...(although sometimes it is nice to put a face with the personality and find out its not Free Willy!) What disturbs me more than anything about that guy is he is naked and you Still can't see any private parts! YAK!
