To get a 'carpet' effect, you can use some plastic canvas (like the kind from a craft store) matched to the color of the moss. "Weave" the moss onto the canvas by tying it with a dark colored aquarium-safe thread, and then use plant weights to keep the moss-covered plastic mesh on the bottom of the tank. The moss should grow across the mesh just fine, althogh it will probably tend to grow up and may need to be trimmed. You can also try to match the color of the mesh to your gravel... but I would probably go with green. It will be less noticable once the moss has grown in.

It is a matter of personal preference, but let me tell you what I did to give you ideas: I started out by tying two clumps to two different parts of my large piece of driftwood with cotton thread. After about a week and a half it seemed to just take off on its own and now it grows all over the wood. It is a nice softening effect and some of my fish and snails love to hang out in it.

Another idea that I tried and am quite happy with is taking a cork from a wine bottle (made of real cork) and slicing the wine stained end off of it and washing it well with water, and tying a nice clump or strand of the moss to the cork and letting it float in the top of the water. It will grow great this way and it adds a nice canopy effect to create some shady areas and break up the bare water surface. Allot of fish like this. Also the moss can grow but is still contained this way as it is easily accessible to remove or trim or move around as you see fit without having any roots planted into anything permanently. Overtime this moss can go pretty wild and it is nice to be able to keep it a little more under control. If your moss does grow outta control, you can always sell it to fish stores for a semi meager stipend that they will resell in little cups and is a way to make a little money back from your hobby.

You can go with either, whichever look you like the best. Personally, I like to place it on driftwood and let it grow along the wood.
