I'm guessing you mean homey because homely means unattractive. Anyhow, color is an important start. Choose a color that you love or gives people an indication of who you are and your personality. Objects such as collections and art tends to make homes warmer and more welcoming. Proper lighting such as task and ambient lighting. Plants do wonders as well. Pictures provide a homey feeling. Scent can also be very important.

some people say KISS, as in Keep It Simple,Stupid.
but a simple house , with handy things that really serve a purpose and a function , is the most homely home anyone could want

Be you, if it makes you happy, stick it in your house, don't put things in because you think other people will like them. Find your own style.
