If you are going to clean a ball mouse properly then first get the ball out of the mouse. There should be an easy way to get it out of the bottom, usually rotating or sliding a cover.

Clean the ball with soapy water.

Look into the space where the ball sits, you should see three wheels or rollers, two are to track the movement of the mouse and one is to keep the ball pressed against the other two. Use a toothpick or something similar to scrape these clean of all the junk that has built up on them. Keep scraping and moving the wheel round until you are sure the entire thing is clean.

Dry off the ball, and put it back.

Use a mouse pad, or regularly clean the part of the desk that the mouse runs over to help slow down the build up of dirt.

Getting a new optical mouse is a lot easier and there are reasonable ones available for <$20

its entirely possible that your tracking settings just need to be adjusted down a bit (as im guessing your cursor might be jumping from one end of the screen to another with little movement?)

start/settings/control panel/mouse/pointer options tab.. then adjust the cursor speed down towards slow until its more manageable

otherwise, if you have an optical mouse, a qtip with some rubbing alcohol in the groove where the tracking light comes out might help

if you have regular PS/2 mouse open it use denatured alcohol and cotton swabs to clean it will be fine

Good luck
