No usage for over 8 hours, shut down. Otherwise leave on with monitor power saving on.

Modern computers do not usually have a problem starting and stopping frequently, so it saves electricity and consequently money to shut it down when you know you aren;t going to be using it for a while.

I think it's better to switch the computer to "hibernate" mode, or "Stand by" mode in other computers. 'cause in that mode, it will need less electricity. But when you shut it down, and turn it on again, a huge amount of eclectricity will require, and of course, more time will be wasted, too! It's also the same with the TV.

Computer On. Monitor off.

1) Constantly turning off and on a hard drive will lessen it's life. Leave your computer on to gain back this loss.

2) During standing time, a monitor uses 70% of the energy used by a computer. Turn the Monitor off.

I highly recommend putting your computer on Hibernation. Its like putting it on stand-by and turning it off. It shuts down the computer, but once you turn it on, it automatically resumes what you are doing. It not like stand by, when the power is still on or shutting down when the power is completely off, and you must reload it back up.

If its a desktop, press shift when you open the shut down menu (To choose to Stand by, restart, or shut down) and stand by will turninto hibernate.
